Channel 8's Charity Show for Sichuan Quake Victims
Channel 8 is collecting donations for Sichuan quake victims by hosting a charity show. Now, i don't remember MediaCorp organizing a similar donation drive for the tsunami victims in Thailand and Indonesia a few years back. Certainly, there isn't one now for the victims in Myanmar who are suffering from the devastation of the cyclone.
This is very interesting. It may well reflect the changing demographics in Singapore today, with the influx of Chinese nationals and the concomitant increase in clout. Who in Singapore started this initiative? Is this a spontaneous bottom-up effort by MediaCorp or an initiative from the top?
It seems to me that the idea of a Chinese cultural or political union in the distant future may not be so far-fetched afterall. I am not entirely confident that our Singaporean culture will naturalize Chinese nationals faster than Chinese nationals can naturalize Singapore.

Yeah I completely agree with you on this! I honestly believe that Myanmmar needs more help than China this time. Yes the people in Sichuan is indeed in need of help - but the Chinese government is definitely powerful enough to settle it themselves now!
I do think that this time the reactions are more emotional than rational :P I didn't donate anything to the Chinese relief efforts; my mum wanted to donate stuff to Myanmmar and I offered whatever material (not money) I can give so she can bring them to those people collecting...
